Clash Royale: Best Evo Mortar Decks

Don't forget the ear muffs.

Mortar is one of the more fun cards to play, as it’s one of two buildings that can hit enemy towers. Since Mortar has been around forever, there are a ton of popular strategies featuring it. In this article I’ll talk about how to play Mortar and go through what its evolution does/changes, then I’ll rank the three best Mortar decks in Clash Royale!

How to Play Mortar & Its Evolution

The evolved version of Mortar doesn’t change much, but what it does change is extremely important. With the evolved version of the Mortar, each shot leaves behind a Goblin where it lands. This increases the DPS against towers since the Goblin adds its own damage, and also greatly improves Mortar’s usefulness for defense. Where typically you never want Mortar hitting troops since it doesn’t do much damage to them, the Goblin can be a lot more effective for that. The evolution for Mortar doesn’t change the way it plays, and in fact I’d say that it’s one of the least noticeable evolutions in the game. Just play the same as usual and everything will be good to go.

In terms of playing Mortar in general, you have to be aggressive. Any time you play Mortar, it will be responded to. You can’t try and wait until your opponent leaves an opening, because there won’t always be one. A good Mortar deck makes its own openings, so you just have to figure out ways to make that happen.

Mortar + Skeleton Barrel

Cards:

  • Mortar (Evo)
  • Skeleton Barrel (Evo)
  • Knight (Hero)
  • Musketeer (Hero)
  • Fireball
  • Minions
  • Skeletons
  • Barbarian Barrel

This Mortar deck has been seeing a lot of play lately, and it’s not hard to see why. For the hero slots this deck has the two obvious picks, Knight and Musketeer. You could put in a Champion there if you prefer, but I don’t think any of them fit in this deck all that well. For the other evolution in this deck, Skeleton Barrel fits the role quite nicely. It applies tons of pressure and serves as the main win con for this deck other than the Mortar itself. Skeleton Barrel works really well since the evolution helps protect it from most counters, and it’s a good alternative win con since Mortar can sometimes be really hard to connect to towers if opponents are playing certain decks.

The rest of this deck is mostly just generic defense. Fireball is the best all-round spell since it deals tons of damage and has a useful knock-back effect, and Barbarian Barrel is perfect for countering ground-based swarms and Goblin Barrel. Then Minions is great for air defense and Skeletons are good distractions for 1 elixir. This deck already has fantastic defense thanks to the heroes, but some extra backup never hurts.

I’d recommend playing pretty aggressively with this deck. Mortar decks have to be aggressive if you want to be able to chip away at towers enough to take at least one out with it, so you can’t sit around doing nothing. Mortar also tends to draw a ton of attention, so you’ll need to be immediately ready with counters like Fireball and Barbarian Barrel when you play it. You don’t want to forget about defending, but you can’t afford to let your opponent control the pace of the game either.

Mortar + Snowball

Cards:

  • Mortar (Evo)
  • Snowball (Evo)
  • Knight (Hero)
  • Musketeer (Hero)
  • Goblin Berserker
  • Cannon Cart
  • Guards
  • Arrows

This Mortar deck is also quite popular right now (in some forms–I did change it a bit). It features the same two heroes as the first one, but differs in the second evolution choice. Snowball is a great cheap spell for defending against low-HP troops, but the evolution allows it to take on a more offensive role. Since opponents are likely to immediately respond to Mortar plays, having a way to clear a path to enemy towers is important. Snowball’s evolution is great for quickly clearing out everything distracting the Mortar so it can get back to hitting towers, all while retaining its defensive abilities.

The main thing I added to this deck is Goblin Berserker. Since he just got a slight buff, I think this is a great chance to get some use out of him. He’s a strong tank that forces a quick response since he has the potential to do so much damage if left unchecked. For defense, this deck also has some good options in Cannon Cart, Guards, and the heroes (Knight and Musketeer). Cannon Cart is great since it does so much DPS and lives for a long time, and Guards is great since they can withstand any hit at least once. Then Arrows is the only spell, but you could switch it for a cheaper one like the Log or Barbarian Barrel if you want.

This deck is a bit more reactive than the first, but it’s still not a full control deck. You do have to wait for an opponent to give you a good reason to use the heroes and Cannon Cart, bu the rest you can be more aggressive with. Mortar can be played in many different ways, so you don’t have to go all in on any one play style. I’d recommend trying to focus on reacting more than creating big plays with this deck, but feel free to try out different strategies.

Mortar + Skeleton King

Cards:

  • Mortar (Evo)
  • Barbarians (Evo)
  • Skeleton King (Hero)
  • Musketeer (Hero)
  • Goblin Barrel
  • Goblin Gang
  • Barbarian Barrel
  • Arrows

For this last Mortar deck, we have one that’s primarily focused on being aggressive and making huge swarms. The core part of this deck is the Skeleton King, who is particularly good and creating swarms. He also benefits from troops dying, so he’s perfect for a deck like this. Barbarians as the second evolution is a risky choice since they can be so easily countered with a single Fireball, but the risk often pays off. They can counter most tanks, destroy towers in seconds, and cause all the chaos I want to see from this kind of deck.

The best thing about this deck is the synergy it has with all the Goblins. Goblin cards are almost always focused on aggression, which is what this deck is all about. Goblin Barrel is one of the best win cons in Clash Royale since it applies constant pressure and does tons of damage. It has to be countered, otherwise they just lose the game. If your opponent has the Log, Barbarian Barrel, or any other counter spell, you can play this deck like a Log Bait one and hope your opponent can’t keep up with you spamming Barrels and swarms. Or you can take things a little slower and try to build up big pushes with Skeleton King pushing towers.

This deck is one of my favorite kinds. You don’t have to worry about any major gaps in your defense, but you also don’t have to spend much time thinking. This is a deck you can go all in on and try to score 3-crown wins, and it’s versatile enough to avoid being too one-sided or risky.
